Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic, the first representative of a subclass of azalides that differ in structure from classical macrolides. A modification of 14-membered macrolides was obtained by incorporating a nitrogen atom in the lactone ring between 9 and 10 carbon atoms.
Azithromycin binds to the 50S subunit of ribosomes, inhibits the peptide translocase at the translation stage and inhibits protein biosynthesis, slowing the growth and reproduction of bacteria.
It is taken orally 1 time / day at 500 mg, regardless of food intake.
